The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to support Australians with disabilities by providing the necessary funding to cover supports and services that assist them in living more independent and fulfilling lives. NDIS funding is categorized into three main types: Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and Capital Supports, each tailored to meet specific needs and objectives.
Core Supports
Core Supports are the most flexible category of NDIS funding, intended to facilitate daily living and social participation. This funding can be used for a variety of needs such as personal care, daily tasks, and community engagement activities. Participants may allocate their Core Supports budget across various sub-categories including Assistance with Daily Life, Transport, Consumables, and Assistance with Social and Community Participation. This flexibility allows participants to adapt their funding usage as their needs or circumstances change.
Capacity Building Supports
The Capacity Building Supports category within the NDIS is designed to enhance a participant’s abilities and independence by focusing on specific areas of skill development and personal goal achievement. Here’s a detailed look at the supports involved in each sub-category:
- Finding and Keeping a Job: Employment services under this category can include job coaching, employment training, workplace adaptation, and support from employment specialists to help participants secure and retain meaningful employment.
- Improved Relationships: Supports here focus on helping participants develop positive social habits and relationships. This could involve behavioral interventions, counseling services, or relationship-building activities, often facilitated by behaviour therapists.
- Improved Life Choices: This includes plan management to help participants manage their NDIS funding more effectively. Plan managers or financial counselors can assist in making informed decisions about the use of supports to maximize independence and participation.
- Improved Daily Living: Occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other specialists provide training and support to improve daily living skills. This can include therapy sessions, life skills training, and other interventions to enhance independence at home and in the community.
Capital Supports
Capital Supports provide funding for significant one-off expenses that are essential for a participant’s daily functioning and safety. This includes mid/high-cost assistive technologies, home modifications, and vehicle modifications. All items and services under Capital Supports must be explicitly approved by the NDIA, and include items such as wheelchairs, home modifications like bathroom rails, and specialized transport vehicles. This type of funding is tightly regulated to ensure that expenditures directly address the participant’s disability needs
