What is SIL (Supported Independent Living)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS support that provides help with daily living tasks for people who need regular or 24/7 support in a shared or individual living arrangement.
SIL is most commonly in shared homes, where participants live with others who also receive support. However, it can also be offered in individual living situations. SIL funding covers the support staff, not the cost of rent, groceries, or utilities.
What is SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing designed for NDIS participants who have extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA homes are purpose-built or modified to improve accessibility, safety, and independence. These properties may include features like:
Wheelchair-accessible layouts
Ceiling hoists
Reinforced walls and windows
Automated doors and lighting
Accessible bathrooms and kitchens
There are four categories of SDA design: Improved Liveability, Fully Accessible, Robust, and High Physical Support. SDA funding pays for the building or dwelling, not the supports or care services within the home. Only participants who meet strict eligibility criteria—based on functional needs and support requirements—can receive SDA funding.
What is ILO (Individualised Living Options)?
Individualised Living Options (ILO) is a flexible support model that allows participants to design a living arrangement that suits their personal needs, preferences, and lifestyle. ILO is ideal for people who do not need 24/7 support or do not want to live in a traditional group home.
ILO arrangements can include:
Living alone with tailored supports
Living with a housemate who provides informal support
Co-residency, where a support person lives with the participant
Living with family or friends, with flexible in-home supports
ILO funding focuses on building relationships, choice, and control, and may involve informal supports, paid support workers, and community connections. It’s highly personalised and planned in two stages: exploration and design, followed by implementation.
